 어제 커뮤니티에서 큰 논란이 된 글이 있었습니다. 라이엇 게임즈가 속칭 ‘롤헬퍼’라고 불리는 비인가 프로그램의 사용을 방관해온 것 아닌가 하는 의구심을 가지게 할 만한 내용이었습니다. 해당 게시물에 Riot룬테라가 댓글로 이미 입장을 밝힌 바 있으나 추가적으로 저희 생각을 말씀드리고자 합니다.

 저희는 공정한 게임 경험이 리그 오브 레전드를 플레이 하는데 있어 가장 중요한 전제라고 생각합니다. 그리고 비인가 프로그램 사용은 이러한 공정한 게임 경험을 해치는 가장 심각한 위협 요소라고 판단하고 있습니다. 따라서 비인가 프로그램 문제를 완전히 해결하지 못하고 있는 현 상황에 대해 무거운 책임감을 느끼고 있습니다. 

 최근 기술적 대응을 대폭 강화하여, 현재는 그 어느 때보다 강도 높은 적발 및 제재가 진행되고 있습니다. 하지만 비인가 프로그램 사용이 완전히 뿌리 뽑힐 때까지, 추가로 필요한 모든 방법을 강구하고 실행해 나가도록 하겠습니다. 

 그렇다면 라이엇이 해당 비인가 프로그램 판매자에게 최초로 보낸 메일의 문구는 왜 그렇게 관대했는지, 또 단호한 법적 조치를 왜 취하지 않았는지 궁금하실 것이라고 생각합니다. 

 먼저 메일 내 지나치게 우호적인 뉘앙스의 문구는 저희의 잘못이 맞습니다. 2014년 6월은 각종 비인가 프로그램들이 막 이슈가 되기 시작한 시점이었는데, 당시 해당 판매자들에게 연락을 취하고, 우선 대화로 사이트 폐쇄를 진행해 보겠다는 의지가 강하여 표현에 실수가 있었습니다. 죄송합니다. 법적인 조치의 경우, 민형사상 소송을 통한 문제 해결보다는 기술적 대응과 당사자 설득에 우선순위를 두어왔던 것이 사실입니다. 

 다만 최근 일련의 사태를 계기로 그동안 저희의 노력과 성과를 겸허하게 되돌아보고 있으며 강력한 법적 조치의 가능성도 열어두고 검토하고 있습니다. 참고로 어제 게시글에서 이슈가 되었던 네이버 카페의 경우 당시 네이버에 신고를 진행하였고, 결국 폐쇄되었다는 것을 확인했습니다. 다만 폐쇄 조치가 저희의 신고로 인한 것인지, 네이버 측의 자체 판단이었는지는 확인할 수 없었습니다. 한편 ‘롤헬퍼코리아’라는 이름으로 운영되던 독립 유포사이트의 경우, 저희의 폐쇄 권고 후 2014년 7월 최종 폐쇄되었음을 확인하였습니다.

 비인가 프로그램 문제로 플레이어 여러분께 계속 실망을 드려서 죄송합니다. 때로는 부족해 보일 수도 있겠지만, 포기 없이 모든 노력을 기울여 반드시 문제를 해결하겠습니다. 심각한 사안이니 만큼 모든 방법을 열어두고 고민하고 있음을 다시 한 번 말씀드립니다.

Yesterday, a player post caused great controversy in the community. The content of the post raised the suspicion that Riot Games may have turned a blind eye to the use of unauthorized programs such as a program known as Lolhelper. Riot Runeterra has already replied to the post in question with our position on this matter, and I would like to further elaborate on this.

 

We believe that a fair gameplay experience is the most important factor in playing League of Legends and the use of unauthorized programs is considered the most serious threat to a fair gameplay environment. As such, we bear a very heavy responsibility for this current situation where the problem of unauthorized programs is not being resolved. Recently, we have further ramped up our technical response and our detection and penalty measures are stronger than they have ever been. However, we will continue to explore and implement all possible additional measures to completely eradicate the use of unauthorized programs.

 

Players are no doubt curious to know why the email that Riot Games sent out to the sellers of unauthorized programs was so lenient, and why we did not take strong legal measures at the time. It’s true that we are at fault for the overly friendly nuance of that email. June of 2014 was a time when various unauthorized programs started to become an issue, and the wording of the email was a misguided reflection of our determination to try to attempt a dialogue with the sellers to persuade them to shut down their operations. We apologize for this error. With regards to legal measures, it’s true that we prioritized technical countermeasures and persuasion through dialogue over taking the path of criminal or civil litigation procedures. However, based on the series of events that have recently unfolded, we are humbly revisiting our past efforts and results, and openly reviewing all possible options, including the possibility of taking severe legal measures. For the sake of clarification on the facts, we confirmed at the time that the Naver Café mentioned in the player post was closed down after we notified Naver. We do not know for sure whether that closure was a direct result of our notification, or was a decision made by Naver based on its own consideration. On the other hand, we also confirmed at the time that the independent ‘Lolhelper Korea’ site was closed down in July 2014 as a direct result of our request to the sellers.

 

I apologize for continuing to disappoint the players with the problem of unauthorized programs. Although we may appear to be lacking at times, we will not cease our efforts and we will solve this problem. I want to stress again that we are taking this matter with the utmost seriousness, and that we are considering all possible measures at this time.
